Whisper-to-speech conversion using restricted Boltzmann machine arrays
Whispers are a natural vocal communication mechanism, in which vocal cords do not vibrate normally. Lack of glottal-induced pitch leads to low energy, and an inherent noise-like spectral distribution reduces intelligibility. Much research has been devoted to processing of whispers, including conversion of whispers to speech. Unfortunately, among several approaches, the best reconstructed speech to date still contains obviously artificial muffles and suffers from an unnatural prosody. To address these issues, the novel use of multiple restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) is reported as a statistical conversion model between whisper and speech spectral envelopes. Moreover, the accuracy of estimated pitch is improved using machine learning techniques for pitch estimation within only voiced (V) regions. Both objective and subjective evaluations show that this new method improves the quality of whisper-reconstructed speech compared with the state-of-the-art approaches
Flexibly-oriented double Cdc45-MCM-GINS intermediates during eukaryotic replicative helicase maturation
The core of the eukaryotic helicase MCM is loaded as an inactive double hexamer (DH). How it is assembled into two active Cdc45-MCM-GINS (CMG) helicases remains elusive. Here, we report that at the onset of S phase, both Cdc45 and GINS are loaded as dimers onto MCM DH, resulting in formation of double CMG (d-CMG). As S phase proceeds, d-CMGs gradually mature into two single CMG-centered replisome progression complexes (RPCs). Mass spectra reveal that RPA and DNA Pol Îą/primase co-purify exclusively with RPCs, but not with d-CMGs. Consistently, d-CMGs are not able to catalyze either the unwinding or de novo DNA synthesis, while RPCs can do both. Using single-particle electron microscopy, we have obtained 2D class averages of d-CMGs. Compared to MCM DHs, they display heterogeneous, flexibly orientated and partially loosened conformations with changed interfaces. The dumbbell-shaped d-CMGs are mediated by Ctf4, while other types of d-CMGs are independent of Ctf4. These data suggest CMG dimers as bona fide intermediates during MCM maturation, providing an additional quality control for symmetric origin activation and bidirectional replication
Electronic properties of a quantum wire with arbitrary bending angle
The electron transmission and bound state properties of a quantum wire with a sharp bend at arbitrary angle are studied, extending results on the right angle sharp bend (the LÂżshaped wire). These new results are compared to those of a similar structure, the circular bend wire. The possibility of using a bent wire to perform transistor action is also discussed
Effects of Multi-Surface Modification on Curie temperature of ferroelectric films
Within the framework of mean field theory, we study the effects of
multi-surface modification on Curie temperature of ferroelectric films using
the transverse Ising model. The general nonlinear equations for Curie
temperature of multi-surface ferroelectric films with arbitrary exchange
constants and transverse fields are derived by the transfer matrix method. As
an example, we consider a film consisting of top surface layers, bulk layers
and bottom surface layers. Two types of surface modifications, modifications of
a surface exchange constant and a surface transverse field are taken into
account. The dependence of Curie temperature on the surface layer numbers, bulk
layer numbers, surface exchange constants, surface transverse fields and bulk
transverse fields is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Persistence, extinction and spatio-temporal synchronization of SIRS cellular automata models
Spatially explicit models have been widely used in today's mathematical
ecology and epidemiology to study persistence and extinction of populations as
well as their spatial patterns. Here we extend the earlier work--static
dispersal between neighbouring individuals to mobility of individuals as well
as multi-patches environment. As is commonly found, the basic reproductive
ratio is maximized for the evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) on diseases'
persistence in mean-field theory. This has important implications, as it
implies that for a wide range of parameters that infection rate will tend
maximum. This is opposite with present results obtained in spatial explicit
models that infection rate is limited by upper bound. We observe the emergence
of trade-offs of extinction and persistence on the parameters of the infection
period and infection rate and show the extinction time having a linear
relationship with respect to system size. We further find that the higher
mobility can pronouncedly promote the persistence of spread of epidemics, i.e.,
the phase transition occurs from extinction domain to persistence domain, and
the spirals' wavelength increases as the mobility increasing and ultimately, it
will saturate at a certain value. Furthermore, for multi-patches case, we find
that the lower coupling strength leads to anti-phase oscillation of infected
fraction, while higher coupling strength corresponds to in-phase oscillation.Comment: 12page
Twist-3 Distribute Amplitude of the Pion in QCD Sum Rules
We apply the background field method to calculate the moments of the pion
two-particles twist-3 distribution amplitude (DA) in QCD sum
rules. In this paper,we do not use the equation of motion for the quarks inside
the pion since they are not on shell and introduce a new parameter to
be determined. We get the parameter in this approach. If
assuming the expansion of in the series in Gegenbauer polynomials
, one can obtain its approximate expression which can be
determined by its first few moments.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Geometry and optics calibration of WFCTA prototype telescopes using star light
The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory project is proposed to study
high energy gamma ray astronomy ( 40 GeV-1 PeV ) and cosmic ray physics ( 20
TeV-1 EeV ). The wide field of view Cherenkov telescope array, as a component
of the LHAASO project, will be used to study energy spectrum and compositions
of cosmic ray by measuring the total Cherenkov light generated by air showers
and shower maximum depth. Two prototype telescopes have been in operation since
2008. The pointing accuracy of each telescope is crucial to the direction
reconstruction of the primary particles. On the other hand the primary energy
reconstruction relies on the shape of the Cherenkov image on the camera and the
unrecorded photons due to the imperfect connections between photomultiplier
tubes. UV bright stars are used as point-like objects to calibrate the pointing
and to study the optical properties of the camera, the spot size and the
fractions of unrecorded photons in the insensitive areas of the camera.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics
Fermion localization on asymmetric two-field thick branes
In this paper we investigate the localization of fermions on asymmetric thick
branes generated by two scalars and . In order to trap fermions on
the asymmetric branes with kink-like warp factors, the couplings with the
background scalars are introduced, where
is a function of and . We find that the coupling
do not support the localization of 4-dimensional
fermions on the branes. While, for the case
, which is the kink-fermion
coupling corresponding to one-scalar-generated brane scenarios, the zero mode
of left-handed fermions could be trapped on the branes under some conditions.Comment: v2: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted by CQ

Chemical potential and symmetry energy for intermediate-mass fragment production in heavy ion reactions near the Fermi energy
Ratios of differential chemical potential values relative to the temperature, ({\ensuremath{\mu}}_{n}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{p})/T, extracted from isotope yields of 13 reaction systems at 40 MeV/nucleon are compared to those of a quantum statistical model to determine the temperature and symmetry energy values of the fragmenting system. The experimental ({\ensuremath{\mu}}_{n}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{p})/T values are extracted based on the modified Fisher model. Using the density value of \ensuremath{\rho}/{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}=0.56 from the previous analysis, the temperature and symmetry energy values of T=4.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4 MeV and {a}_{\mathrm{sym}}=23.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.1 MeV are extracted in a framework of a quantum statistical model. These values agree well with those of the previous work, in which a self-consistent method was utilized with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics simulations. The extracted temperature and symmetry energies are discussed together with other experimental values published in literature
